Turning daily hearing challenges into effortless moments

For many people, managing hearing aids can feel confusing and overwhelming. With the Widex Allure app, we set out to turn that challenge into a seamless and confident experience — helping users reconnect with the world through design that is simple, personal, and empowering.

Insights

Living with hearing loss goes beyond the physical challenge — it can affect confidence, social connection, and independence. Many hearing aid users struggle with complex interfaces, unclear feedback, and uncertainty about whether their devices are working as intended. This often leaves them feeling dependent rather than empowered. Our research showed that users need to feel in control — to trust that their hearing aids respond naturally to their environment and to their touch. The Widex Allure project began with that understanding: to design a companion experience that restores a sense of confidence, clarity, and ease in managing hearing.

Solution

We designed a companion app that brings simplicity and control to hearing aid management. Built as a regulated medical device for iOS and Android, the Widex Allure app allows users to connect to their hearing aids, fine-tune sound environments, and personalize their listening experience. Each feature was developed through close collaboration with engineers, audiologists, and usability experts to ensure safety, accessibility, and ease of use. By combining thoughtful design with medical-grade reliability, the app turns everyday hearing adjustments into effortless, confident moments — helping users stay connected to the world around them.

In my dual role, I bridged creative UX design with regulated usability engineering — ensuring every feature met both user expectations and medical-device standards.

Design Process


The project followed the Double Diamond framework, combining creative exploration with medical-grade rigor.

  • Discover: Interviews and field research with hearing aid users and hearing care professionals to identify pain points and usability challenges.
  • Define: Personas, user journeys, and design principles centered on reassurance, clarity, and control.
  • Develop: Interactive prototypes and iterative testing to validate flows, refine accessibility, and enhance ease of use.
  • Deliver: Collaboration with QA, clinical, and regulatory teams to validate critical tasks according to IEC 62366 and FDA human-factors standards.

Each decision was guided by user evidence, aligning human needs with product safety and compliance requirements.

Key Contributions


  • UX & Design System Development: Evolved the Widex mobile design system to ensure usability,accessibility, brand integrity, and platform-native consistency.
  • Risk Management: Identified potential use-related risks and mitigated them through task analysis and early-stage evaluations.
  • Test Planning & Validation: Designed and executed formative usability tests, and coordinated summative validation under FDA and EU MDR frameworks.
  • Usability Documentation: Authored and maintained deliverables (user profiles, use specifications, task analysis, risk control measures), securing full QA and stakeholder approval.
  • Stakeholder Collaboration: Worked with AI specialists, audiologists, and product teams to balance innovation, usability, and safety.
